TSA, are they relevant to me or only to America?

I'm travelling to Europe (will be having stopovers in Germany, Singapore, and Hong Kong) and arrive and depart from Heathrow airport. Quite naturally I am wanting to secure my luggage with some form of padlock. I am however concerned that if security wants to look in my bag, they will need to break the lock. There are TSA approved locks that mean security can look through my bags without destroying my lock.

The TSA locks are just an American thing.
But wherever you travel, if security wants to open your case, they will just do it.
Even when you have an TSA approved lock they may just break it if they are really suspicious, they will not use the TSA lock master key outside the USA.

I find it best to travel with not locking my bags. If it is valuable, it is in my carry on luggage, which I do not let go out of my sight, if it is in the check-in luggage, it is can be lost.
But in any case, if you can not stand to lose, it, leave it home.
If and when I use locks on my zippers in check in luggage, they are the tiny, cheap ones that can easily be broken and are just means to keep the zips together, as every thief can open them. A cheap piece of string works as good.

The rules on what you can bring onto the plane are alike for the TSA and your destinations, but they are not the same.
The TSA is allowing some scissors and things like knitting needles, the European airports are still very strict in not allowing anything sharp or pointy. If you want to bring anything that can be used a weapon in a pinch, best carry it in your check in luggage.
