Hawaii Luau On Kauai With Smith’s Tropical Paradise

The luau is a  tradition that started in 1819 by King Kamehameha II, who held a great dinner during which he ate with women and commoners as a symbolic act to mark the end of certain Hawaiian religious tabus. Smith’s Tropical Paradise Luau proudly holds this custom by serving fine dining and entertainment.

These feasts were named ‘luaus’ after one of the many delicacies served at these special evenings – taro leaves with chicken, baked in coconut leaves (a dish now known as luau chicken).

When you arrive at the Kauai airport (don’t forget to schedule your traditional lei airport greeting in advance!) Smith’s Tropical Paradise Luau is just a short drive along Wailua Road in your Kauai car rental.

For over 50 years, the same family has run  Smith’s Tropical Paradise Hawaiian Luau, helping keep this significant cultural tradition alive. They have most certainly perfected the art of the luau!

Amidst thirty beautiful acres of gardens along Wailua River, Smith’s Tropical Paradise Luau begins with a shell lei greeting on arrival, followed by some leisure time to enjoy the garden setting.

The ceremony commences with the blowing of the conch shell and the unearthing of the roast from the imu oven at 6 pm. An evening of fine dining and great entertainment immediately follow. As you enjoy a Mai Tai, experience traditional island dances and music and see the Goddess of Fire and Volcano, Pele, come out of the darkness!

Now that you have your first dinner in Hawaii sorted out, what will you decide to do for lunch? You’ll be pleased to know that there are all kinds of different ways in which to enjoy a meal on Kauai!

One of them would be a Niihau Snorkel Sail along the Niihua & the Napli Coast. This tour leaves from Port Allen Harbour and is the only cruise that travels to Niihau – the “Forbidden Isle”. During a deli-style buffet lunch on the ‘HoloHolo’, you will have magnificent ocean and coastline vistas , and a chance to go snorkelling amidst unique coral formations.

If lunch afloat isn’t really your idea of fun, maybe you would enjoy a Kauai Jungle Valley Adventure on the pristine perfect lands of Princeville Ranch. Take a nice drive from the airport or town in your Lihue car rental, and you may come upon the an ideal setting for a well-deserved lunch in a secret twin waterfall and mountain pool, after you hike, swim, float, kayak and dangle your way across Princeville Ranch land!

A Kauai Backcountry Water Tubing tour may be just the thing for those of you who don’t enjoy quite so much intense activity before eating. Suitable for all levels of fitness, you can depart from Hanama’ulu headquarters and spend three hours floating along with gently flowing irrigation water.

Kauai Backcountry Water Tubing guides you through wide ditches, tunnels, fumes and other feats of engineering that were hand dug for the Lihue sugar plantation circa 1870, with a break for a picnic lunch of cold water, juice, cookies, sandwiches and chips.

Meals on Kauai are never boring when you can take part in a traditional Hawaiian feast at Smith’s Tropical Paradise Luau or a more laid-back meal beside a secluded pool!
