Will a power supply with low Amperage connected to a device that requires high amperage destroy it?
I have a DVR recorder used for CCTV cameras. It's brand is Rover Systems (a small one 4CH) and it uses SATA hard disk drive.
The DVR power rating is 12V DC 3.5A. While connecting I accidentally used a power supply of 12V DC 1.5A for around 30 seconds. The DVR seems to be working fine.
FYI, The wrong power supply was smaller compared to the power supply of the DVR, which is bigger and wires are thicker.
Will using this wrong low amperage power supply for 30 seconds possibly destroy some components of the DVR?
The equipment will draw as much current as it needs from the psu (power supply unit) for it to function.
If the psu can only deliver a low amount of current (Amps) and the equipment needs a higher amount of current, the equipment will try it's hardest to extract what it needs and if the psu cannot sustain the delivery then the internal components (of the psu and not the DVR) will more than likely overheat and go up in smoke.
30 seconds is not sufficient to cause harm but if it was left for several hours then probably it would.
Usually if a psu cannot deliver what the equipment need then perhaps the DVR only need a low amount of current; if howeevr, all channels were fired up then it would be a different story.
