The gentle love  tap on my window at dawn.

By Prof Ghulam Mohyuddin Wani

It was early in the mooring of February 14,It was my 62nd lonely Feb of 2011..I woke up by a gentle tap on my window pan. The intense cold outside has reduced the internal temperature of my small winter room to around 8 degree celcies.

To keep me warm, I had a pair of woollen blanket under and over me with those nice heating electric blankets inside. The only window of the room was covered with heavy curtain over a double glass covered windows, not to allow the outside winds to creep in and disturb my sleep. It had rained all the night ,heavy showers and snow mixed of that typical Chelae Bache winter of cashmere.

On hearing that gentle tap, I took the blanket over my head and tried to nap again. I took the tap as some sound usually coming from the fall of snow slip from our tin roof. I was about to nap when  I heard the gentle tap again, this time more loudly and with force, as some one  is there to wake me up.

I was startled, who could be there in these wee hours, who has not cared to ring the bell and has come direct to my window .I took it either the tap from a vampire, or what we call an evil spirit or ghost and started fearing it. The tap was now continuous and I took it some  one is there. Some vore  of the town has been witching me from last few days on face book and feeding me with dreadening notes

I thought perhaps the vamp has dared to haunt me. I was a bit enraged to teach her a les son .I gathered courage and took the curtain off. I was surprised to find none at the site and thus  a sigh of relief and laughed on my folly.

Now that I had woke up and again having a nap was impossible, I rang the bell to call my helper and asked him a cup of tea. I also checked from him to check the compound gate see if someone was there. Generally the milk man or the newspaper wander do come some times before dawn, when often the Cashmere is held under curfew.

In the previous years when many innocent boys and girls were killed in cold blood ,the occuping forces and its state agents clamped a continuous curfew .This was the period when even children were left without milk and patients without medicine and health care. He confirmed there was no curfew and none has been to our house as all the gates were closed. While I was sipping the tea (brook bond tea sac in a cup of milk which the milk man agree to have more than 30% water added.

Amusingly he say this is what he knows, may the women from whom he purchases  may also be adding 10% too, as it is usually not detected by my old lactometer, I carry with me) In view of the revelations I was sipping more water than tea as, of late my helper too has leaned to put water .He mixes it to rob of few bucks to make good her evening wandering in the street. Coming to the tap, whole I was sipping the tea,

I heard the tap again. This time it was full brightness all around as such she could not hide and was caught. She was a beautiful she. She was strolling the six feet distance between my window and the compound wall of my neighboured. I was not sure, but it seemed to have come from over the wall and tapped my window earlier and now too. I was immersed in her beautiful walk, which I must add was more enchanting than the modules brat Netcom dance in those famous Indian Movies. She was slim, with jet black hair half cut to give a crown like copy look on her heather neck was log and slim like that which Asian poets called sou-rahidar gardan (bottle necked).

She was strolling alone across this 6 ft wide and 12 feet long tract with grace and unmindful of any one.It watched from the window, without disturbing her. She was in deep thoughts and was chaptering some beautiful song in a foreign language which I was unable to understand. On each of the stroll in the tract she will bent and try to search something from the ground. I was immersed in her innocence and envied her. She never cared for the intense cold and went to sing and dance on her thoughts without caring or even tiring to know some is gazing her. Her eyes were deep swollen as if she has had that poetic vine stored in them or has not slept all the night and was in an eternal wait for some and like some at 62,searching all but finding none.

On watching her for an hour or so, I saw someone calling her from across the wall. He too was beautiful like she just of her make. I could not make out who is male and who is female till they flied to the neighbour's house where their nest lay, as she was none but the MENA, who live in my neighbourhood. I followed her to her abode,

it was a well built nest of little twigs, petals an mud wound tighter by the two to have a nest in the high tower wall of our neighbours mason's call her Mena the little singing bird who is now mu regular companion at dawn. She continues to wake me up by her gentle beak tap on my window pan, perhaps to amuse me or find little grains to seduce her huger for the day.
