How do I carry on my roll behind luggage and put it at the end of the ramp to store under the plane?
I've gone on at least one flight where I saw people with luggage that you think they would have checked. But they pulled it behind them and left it at the end of the ramp for the workers to store below the plane. When we stopped they picked it up again at the end of the ramp and took it up with them. Someone has said that this may be pink or red tagging but I'm not sure what that is either? Can anyone explain how I can do this?
Sometimes, luggage that is small enough to qualify as carry on luggage is too small to fit in the overhead compartments of smaller planes. When that happens, the airlines will do what's called a gate check, which is what you're describing. As far as I know, it's only done under the circumstances I just mentioned. It's not a way for people to get around paying checked baggage fees, because the bag still has to be small enough to be a carry on. Also, if you're on a larger plane, you should be able to use the overhead compartments, so a gate check won't be necessary.
If you need to do a gate check, tell the gate agent. That's the airline employee who's working at the gate you're leaving from. They'll give you a small tag, similar to a luggage tag, that you put on your bag. The end of the tag tears off, like a ticket stub, and that's what you keep to prove that your bag is yours. Then you leave the bag at the end of the ramp, which is also where you pick the bag up after the plane lands.
