Bandra Worli sea Link : Is such high clearence necessary ? and why *EIGHT* lanes ?

Sea depth over there seems to too shallow to allow cargo ships to pass under. Ships over there seem to be very small fisherman ships not the big ones.. There no docks nearby.
Why floating bridge was not used ?..( with small section at centre point with high clearence)
It seems to me that importance of high clearence was over rated.
Also why eight lanes when only 4 lanes would be used where bridge lands at road on shore.
It is obvious that the construction company wanted to make tonnes of money from it. And also the government officials don't give a damn after approving the projects. The bigger they make the more profit they can create.
It was also created with high influence from the congress (then ruling party) so that it could get over by next elections and they can show a grand project as their contribution to the infrastructure of the city... Politics!!
Plus this bridge is next getting an extension to Haji Ali and maybe to Nariman Point. The major idea was to create a parallel to the narrow city flyovers and ease of congestion. As it is a long term project and keeping in mind the exponential increase in no of vehicles ploughing mumbai roads it was well planned to give 8 lanes. It gives International Standards of road transport to our Commercial capital !!
