Travel Tips For Belarus

Belarus formerly called as Belorussia is situated in Eastern Europe with an area of 80,153 sq miles with population around 10 millions. The capital city of Belarus is Minsk and the currency here in use is Belarusian ruble. Majority of people here speak Russian and Belarusian. Christianity prevails in larger extent over the country, however we still can find Jewish and Muslim communities, but in small number. The climatic conditions are cool and you are advised to carry your sweaters and raincoats throughout the year if you travel there.

If you are really looking for cheaper modes of transportation, public buses and trains are also available. However, traveling may be very crowded in the morning and evening times which are the peak hours for government offices and schools. Minsk is the capital of Belarus and there one can find a cheap and efficient system of transportation, the metro. The taxis are simply awesome and you can reach your destination, wherever that might be in anything less than $5. The same goes with any other town of Belarus. You should call the taxi at your hotel by requesting the staff instead of going and finding it at the street corner. This is because it is better not to go in a taxi with a stranger especially because there are quite a few rogues who are hunting for gullible foreigners.

There are suburban trains which go to the nearest towns from the main train station. It is better if you opt for the buses for traveling within Belarus. They are not only cheap but quick too. Additionally they are quite safe also. If you have to travel for a long distance, then it would be better if you opt for the railways services. The fares are fixed and you don’t get duped. The rails have sleeping coaches so it is helpful especially if you are traveling overnight. Overnight trains from Minsk to Moscow and Kiev are quite good. Warsaw and St. Petersburg are also connected via trains. Flying in Belarus can be an expensive affair. The airports also do not have a good infrastructure ever since the breakdown of former USSR.

Belarus has numerous ATM machines in the main cities. And it is important that you carry cash in your wallet. This is because most of the shopping places do not accept credit cards. So you have to use cash instead. The local currency is Belarusian Ruble and you can find its current price at any of the internet exchange sites. There are many currency exchange counters in Belarus. Here you can easily get your currency exchanged according to the present rates. Many shops and other places accept Euros and dollars. So the Europeans and Americans need not bother!

No departure tax is levied. Visitors need to complete the customs declaration form and should keep it with them till they depart. According to Belarus custom duties, tourists can import goods up to the value of one thousand dollars; however tourists are not allowed to carry weapons, fruits and vegetables. And in same way export of precious gems and metals is also prohibited strictly. Visas must be registered at hotels if tourists hire some local cars.
