Travel Tips

Travel isn’t always relaxing. Spending time in airports isn’t the way most people would choose to spend an afternoon. Whether you’re headed to your parents for the holidays or going on a last minute business trip, traveling is frustrating at the best of times. Packing can be stressful to. When you’re waiting at the gate, you might be wondering what will be available at your destination and what you should leave behind. Last minute packing is the worst; running around at the last minute to make sure you have everything you need.

Packing may well be the most important part of your travel.  You don’t want to leave anything behind that you might need later, nor do you want to be stuck at the airport repacking and rearranging after a miserable trip through security.  One of the sacred rules of airline travel today:  you cannot bring liquids past the security checkpoint.  This includes beverages, toothpaste, liquid deodorant, lotion, lip gloss, aerosols and much more.  Many of us are so used to packing these items in our carry-on luggage we don’t think twice about it and only after your bag passes through the x-ray machine and the security officer rifles through your bag and confiscates your Country Apple Bath and Body works lotion does the reality set in—and they’re not giving it back!

Travelers may avoid this by making themselves aware of the rules of traveling. One of these rules is that they should pack bigger bottles of liquids into the bags you’re checking. Airports permit the carrying of small clear zipper-locked bag with liquids three ounces or less on the plane (no aerosols). Simple remember to pack these items in a small zip-lock bag and all other liquids in bags that are to be checked. Another factor people must bear in mind is their shoes. Travelers should remember that at every checkpoint they are required to take off their shoes. If you are wearing shoes that are difficult to remove quickly, you will impede traffic flow and soon become a bother to security, other passengers and yourself. To avoid this complication it is suggested that you wear pair of sneakers that are easily removed; if needed, you should pack the shoes you’re going to wear in your carry-on bag and change after you’ve pass all checkpoints. This would simplify the entire procedure.

Depending on the time of year when you’re traveling, be sure to arrive at the airport at least two hours before your flight is scheduled to depart.  The boarding process typically begins 30 to 40 minutes before take off, leaving you with only an hour and a half to complete the rest of your check in—and there is plenty to do.

Relying on how your ticket was reserved, you may be required to print your ticket at a check-in station. These stations are now made up of kiosks, though they may be convenient, they require you to do most of the work. Because they require you to know what you are doing it is a good idea that you have your ticket record locator (normally a 13-digit number), your conformation number and driver’s license (or other sate id) readily available. After using either you conformations number or ticket record locator you may print your ticket, check your luggage, show id and begin the treacherous at of going through the checkpoints.

Depending on how you made your flight reservation, you may print your ticket at the check-in kiosk. These kiosks are self-serve, so you don most of the work yourself. This is convenient, but you need to know how to use them or else check-in can eat-up your time at the airport. Keep some things close at hand: your ticket record locator (a 13-diget number), confirmation number and driver’s license. After checking in and printing your ticket, you can check your bags at the counter and show your ID to the ticket agent. Now you’re free of your huge suitcase and you can head for the security checkpoint!

There are lots of places to get even more travel tips.  Keeping these in mind when it’s time to take your trip will help you to feel less panicked about what you might have missed.  Hopefully the tips above will prove helpful to you.  Good luck and happy travels!
